JOINT URBAN MANPOWER PROGRAM, INC.
The Joint Urban Manpower Program (JUMP) is pleased to announce an exciting new chapter in its history. On July 1, 2001, JUMP teamed with the New York City Technical College (or City Tech) of the City University of New York to provide the recruitment, screening, testing and classroom training that was previously provided by the Vocational Foundation, Inc. As you may know, the NYS Department of Transportation funds JUMP and accepts participation in JUMP as fulfillment of the training requirements in NYSDOTs contracts.
JUMPs affiliation with City Tech adds some significant dimensions to a program which, in its 33 year history, has already trained over 850 educationally and economically disadvantaged young men and women in the New York City metropolitan area. JUMP trainees will be taught by faculty from the Department of Civil Engineering Technology/Construction Technology. Working with the JUMP Board, City Tech has updated the technical curriculum to ensure that it meets the requirements of consulting engineering firms that hold NYSDOT contracts. City Tech has several laboratory facilities of relevance to JUMP training, has coordinated NICET testing for the last 15 years, and has extensive experience preparing disadvantaged youth for the demands of the workplace.
JUMP was started in 1968 by engineers and architects as a way of providing career opportunities for meaningful employment to disadvantaged youth. Today, JUMP is a partnership managed by a volunteer Board of Directors from consulting engineering firms, in cooperation with NYSDOT and, now, City Tech as our training arm. The program currently trains construction inspectors and CAD drafters in NYSDOT Regions 8, 10, and 11.
